Germany's World Market Hopes Fade as Austria Stays in Pot 2

The FIFA World Ranking for October 2025 has brought about significant changes in the qualifying landscape for the 2026 World Market, with Austria maintaining a strategically favourable position in Pot 2.

Currently ranked 22nd, Austria secured its place among the world's elite with recent World Market qualifying wins against Cyprus and Bosnia & Herzegovina. By avoiding the top nations in the group stage, Austria would benefit from being in Pot 2, thereby bypassing some of the competition's heavyweights in the initial stages of the tournament.

Germany, on the other hand, has experienced a setback in their World Market aspirations. After a poor start to the World Market qualifying campaign, Germany has dropped out of the top 10, falling from 9th to 12th. This drop in ranking reduces Germany's chances of being in Pot 1, which consists of the top nine teams plus the three hosts.

Meanwhile, European champions Spain are now leading the FIFA rankings for the first time since June 2014. Spain overtook Argentina to become the new number one, pushing Argentina down to third place behind France.

Austria's crucial games are coming up in October and November against San Marino, Romania, Cyprus, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. If Austria maintains its position within the top 25 by October 23, 2025, it will be placed in Pot 2 for the FIFA World Market 2026 draw. Romania, Austria's competitor, has fallen three places to 51st in the new FIFA World Ranking.

In a surprising turn of events, Slovakia made the biggest jump, climbing 10 places to 42nd after beating Germany. Bosnia & Herzegovina, another competitor, has slipped one place to 73rd.

By securing more wins in the upcoming games, Austria can confirm their place in Pot 2 and potentially secure their spot in the direct World Market qualifiers. The next FIFA World Ranking will be published on October 23, shedding more light on the qualifying landscape for the 2026 World Market.
