Austrian Authorities Kick Out Climate Activist: Two-Year Exile for Anja Windl
Austria imposes residency restriction on German climate activist - Austria Imposes Residential Restriction on German Climate Protester
Austria has given German climate activist Anja Windl, a resident of Klagenfurt, a two-year ban. Officially, she's deemed a "substantial menace to public order and safety" according to a 40-page letter from the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum (BFA), as uncovered by dpa.
The BFA's decision isn't solely about Windl's climate demonstrations. Her recent actions targeting the ÖVP party headquarters have stirred a "massive disruptive inclination" that transcends climate activism, the letter suggests.
In January, Windl showed her discontent during coalition talks between the conservative ÖVP and the right-wing FPÖ, writing on the ÖVP headquarters' outer wall, "You reek of brown filth."
Windl, originally from Straubing, is preparing an appeal to the Federal Administrative Court within the allotted four-week period. She emphasized her refusal to be intimidated in a conversation with dpa, asserting, "In the face of rising fascism and a world on fire, peaceful protest is indispensable."
A History of Arrests and Detainment
Windl has participated in sit-ins and other climate protection protests, ignoring police orders to depart. The BFA says she's been detained over ten times for administrative offenses against the Assembly Act and Road Traffic Act.
Due to her inability to meet expensive fines, Windl has served a total of nine weeks in detention during 2024 and 2025. Thanks to donations, she's managed to avoid further detention, she stated.
Windl's attorney expresses astonishment at the bureaucratic measure, as Windl has never been convicted of a criminal act in Austria. He told dpa that ongoing criminal charges against Windl and other ex-members of 'Last Generation' involve criminal association and property damage.
BFA: Windl Inspired by Radical Left Ideology
According to the BFA, Windl has further showcased her radical leftist ideology by feeding official Austrian documents to livestock. She also endorsed a pie-throwing incident involving former German Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP), as claimed by the BFA.
