Austria Triumphs at Eurovision: JJ Wins with "Wasted Love"
Austria clinches victory at Eurovision Song Contest
In a surprising turn of events at the Eurovision Song Contest, Austria clinched the top spot. The countertenor JJ, whose real name is Johannes Pietsch, emerged victorious in Basel with his heart-wrenching ballad "Wasted Love". Israel finished a close second, while Estonia took third place.
JJ left the competition far behind with a total of 436 points from both jury and audience votes. Israel's representative, Yuval Raphael, scored 357 points, just missing the mark. Estonia's Tommy Cash trailed behind with one point less than Israel.
The Austrian's dramatic staging of "Wasted Love," resembling an opera, particularly impressed the jury and significantly contributed to his win. Jury votes accounted for over half of the points with JJ receiving a whopping 258 points. However, in the public voting, Israel, Estonia, or Sweden were ahead of Austria[1][2][3].
With this triumph, Austria achieves its third Eurovision win since 1966 and the second successful performance by a countertenor, following Conchita Wurst's victory in 2014. Before the contest, JJ was considered one of the top favorites behind Sweden in the betting offices[4]. After his victory, he expressed his joy, stating, "This win is beyond my wildest dreams. Love is never wasted. Love is truly the strongest force out there."
Turbulent Evening Marked by Political Tensions
The event was marred by political tensions related to Israel's participation. Israel's 24-year-old singer Yuval Raphael, a survivor of the Islamic Hamas and other terrorist groups' October 7, 2023, massacre, showcased her pain and hope in her song "New Day Will Rise."
Despite calls for boycott and protests against Israel's participation, Germany's Ministry of Culture strongly condemned such actions. Previous years had seen similar controversies, such as anti-Israeli protests overshadowing the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo[4].
Amidst the tensions, a disturbance occurred during Israel's performance. A man and a woman attempted to storm the stage at the end of the performance, but were prevented by security personnel. One crew member was hit by paint thrown by the intruders[4].
Germany's Disappointing Results Under Stefan Raab's Influence
Germany's expectations for a top placing at the Eurovision Song Contest did not materialize, finishing 15th out of 26 finalists. Abor & Tynna, the German sibling duo representing the country with their song "Baller," performed worse than last year. Their performance was largely influenced by host and actor Stefan Raab, the 2010 winner and Germany's self-proclaimed Eurovision guru[4].
Raab had been actively promoting the song and even attempted to mobilize Germans on Mallorca to vote for Abor & Tynna. Despite Raab's efforts, Germany's record in the competition remained poor, with mostly last or second-to-last places[4].
