Austria braces for digital ID chaos as 300,000 certificates expire
A surge in demand at Austrian registration offices is expected in summer 2026. The reason is the simultaneous expiration of over 300,000 ID Austria certificates between May and August that year. Without timely renewals, hundreds of thousands could lose access to essential digital government services. The upcoming wave of expirations stems from certificates issued when the ID Austria system (formerly Handy-Signatur) began. All renewals must be completed before the current certificate expires—once lapsed, users will have no choice but to visit government offices in person.
Online renewal is free, quick, and extends validity by up to five years. Those eligible can complete the process via the ID Austria app, the A-Trust Signature app, or the A-Trust website. However, non-Austrian citizens and users whose basic ID was not issued by an official authority must renew in person regardless. A-Trust has warned that delays could lead to long queues at registration offices. To avoid disruption, users are urged to check their expiry date now and renew early. The date can be found in the ID Austria app, the A-Trust Signature app, or on the A-Trust website.
Failure to renew on time will cut off access to digital services until an in-person visit is made. With over 300,000 certificates expiring in just four months, early action is the only way to prevent bottlenecks. The process takes minutes online but cannot be done once the certificate has lapsed.
