Australia's first major EV charging hub breaks ground at Melbourne Airport
BP Pulse has begun building Australia's first large-scale electric vehicle (EV) charging hub at Melbourne Airport. The project marks a significant step in expanding the country's EV infrastructure. Airport officials and the company have highlighted its benefits for both travellers and the local community. The new hub will sit on the corner of Airport Drive and Francis Briggs Road, close to the airport's Value Car Park and Wait Zone. It will include 24 charging bays, offering 150- and 300-kilowatt chargers, with options for accessible and drive-through use. A canopy and bathroom facilities will also be part of the design.
Construction is set to finish later in 2023. Once operational, the hub will run entirely on renewable electricity sourced from Melbourne Airport's solar farms. BP Pulse, which has installed over 290 EV charging bays across Australia since 2022, aims to support a wide range of drivers, including those working for ride-sharing services like Uber.
Jai McDermott, Melbourne Airport's chief of ground transport, property, and retail, welcomed the development. The hub is the first of its kind at an Australian airport, offering a major boost to the airport precinct and surrounding area. The charging hub will provide faster and more accessible EV charging for airport visitors and nearby residents. Its completion will add to BP Pulse's growing network of charging stations across the country. The project aligns with broader efforts to increase renewable energy use in transport infrastructure.
