Michael Scheid, a legendary figure in the South Australian arts industry, passed away on August 6 in Adelaide. Known for his versatile career as an actor, puppeteer, and children's arts narrator, Scheid left an indelible mark on the local arts scene.

In the 1980s, Scheid gained local fame as Adelaide’s town crier in Rundle Mall, a role that perfectly showcased his powerful voice and infectious enthusiasm. He was a regular performer in South Australian theatre, notably with the Therry Dramatic Society and Mighty Good Productions. One of his most memorable roles was as the Cowardly Lion in a 1985 production of The Wizard of Oz at Bunyip Theatre.

Scheid's passion extended beyond performing arts; he was also known for his love of classic cars. He frequently participated in the Bay to Birdwood motoring event with his 1956 Morris Minor.

From 1998 to 2022, Scheid narrated performances for the Australian Classical Youth Ballet and often appeared as Bookworm, a character loved by children and the arts community. His connection with children's arts continued into recent years.

Scheid also appeared in Australian film and television. He starred in the 2003 movie Travelling Light opposite Pia Miranda and Marshall Napier, and the 1984 Channel Ten drama Carson’s Law.

His collaborators and peers remembered him fondly for his creativity, warmth, and zest for life. Michael Mills, a musical collaborator of Scheid, highlighted how Scheid’s presence brought “crazy, remarkable, all manner of things” to life.

Michael Scheid was survived by his daughters Alice and Cathy, and his family was with him during his final moments. The news of his death was confirmed by his daughter Cathy in a heartbreaking social media statement. His passing was mourned by the South Australian arts industry.

Scheid had a significant impact on the emerging arts and theatre industry in South Australia, contributing significantly to local theatre, children’s ballet narration, and Australian film and TV. His diverse career and enduring influence will be remembered for years to come.
