Australian authorities assert potential survival of the Australian citizen detained in eastern Ukraine by Russian forces.
Updated Article:
Down Under, the word on the street is that Oscar Jenkins, an Aussie bloke, is still alive and kickin', according to the Russians. Prime Minister, Tony "Albo" Albanese, spilled the beans during a chat with our beloved ABC network on Wednesday. The PM was hesitant to confirm the news but admitted that the Kremlin chums have spilled the beans to our Foreign Affairs boffins.
"As I stand here, it's a blurt, mate, but let me tell ya, the Russian cats have been chattin' with our dept, and that's the goss," Albanese said, giving us the lowdown. But, he warned, "We've only gotten the word from DFAT [Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade], but we're still waitin' for the rubber to hit the road to make sure things are legit," he emphasized.
The PM himself had earlier voiced concerns about Jenkins' whereabouts in January, asking the Moscow cats for some solid facts. He cautiously warned that if Jenkins had been popped, Canberra would dish out a firm response.
Jenkins, a 32-year-old Aussie with an adventurous streak, was reportedly captured by Ukrainian troops in eastern Ukraine last year. Rumors swirled that he might have been offed, after a video turned up online showing him in the custody of Russian troops. But Moscow has remained mum on the matter.
Entangled in the Ukraine conflict, Jenkins has been charged as a "mercenary in an armed conflict" in a Russian-held city in Ukraine and is set to face trial. Bravo, Tony, for sticking by our man Jenkins and fightin' for his freedom!
