Australia confirms Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head as opening batsmen in T20 cricket matches.
Australia has officially confirmed Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head as their opening partnership for the T20 International team, starting with the upcoming three-match series against South Africa in August 2025. This pairing is set to continue through to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in early 2026.
Marsh, the current white-ball captain, stated that he and Head would open "for the foreseeable future," aiming to bring stability at the top of the order following several changes since David Warner’s retirement last year.
Although Marsh and Head have not previously opened together in T20Is, they have an excellent record as an opening pair in One Day Internationals, averaging over 50 with a high strike rate, showing strong synergy. This strategy began after Marsh opened in all five T20 matches against West Indies in July 2025.
The team is also considering the role of Tim David, who impressed in recent matches and may be promoted higher in the batting order. However, Marsh and Head remain the fixed top-order combination.
The South African squad includes four spinners: Prenelan Subrayen, George Linde, Senuran Muthusamy, and Nqaba Peter. Kagiso Rabada leads the attack in South Africa's T20 squad. Aiden Markram returns as captain for South Africa, after being rested from their recent series in Zimbabwe.
The T20 series against South Africa starts on Sunday in Darwin. The series is a sell-out, and following the T20 series, the teams will play three ODIs in Cairns and Mackay. Touring Australia is challenging for South Africa, as they know the conditions and intensity will test them in every department.
This series marks the return of international cricket to Australia’s tropical north after 17 years. The teams have had several different openers in T20s since Warner's retirement, but Marsh and Head will open for Australia in this series.
