Australia Celebrates as Hansa Class World Championships Delivers Podium Victory

Sailing Underdogs Rory McKinna and Jess Wong Rule the Hansa 303 Worlds

In a surprising conclusion to the Hansa 303 two-person class on March 30, nestled down under Australia, Rory McKinna, a Scotsman hailing from the *Clyde Cruising Club, and local Aussie Jess Wong clinched the world title.

A fortuitous encounter at the Pittwater Regatta set the stage for their victory. Rory, a sprightly 23-year-old, had initially planned to participate only in the solo event. In a last-minute decision, he ventured into the duo event, seeking a sailing partner.

Through a mutual connection, Aussie Jess, new to Hansa sailing, found herself in the boat with Rory. Their initial meeting was serendipitous, and after sharing the boat for just a few minutes, Rory knew they'd make a winning pair.

"Once we set sail, I could tell we'd gel effortlessly," Rory shared. "There was no stumbling, no awkward moments – we found our rhythm quickly."

Rory and Jess edged out Chris Symonds and Maunela Klinger from Australia, as well as Piotr Cichocki and Olga Górnas-Grudzien from Poland, who suffered a penalty in Race 5, causing them to drop to third place overall and relinquish the world title.

Overcast skies and strong winds on the final racing day at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club on Pittwater forced the cancellation of races, denying Rory a chance at an additional world title in the singles fleet. However, the rain couldn't dampen Rory's spirits, especially after his day of sailing around Scotland Island on Sydney's Northern Beaches.

"Winning the doubles was totally unexpected," Rory grinned. "I never imagined myself on the podium, let alone in first place!"

With the European season starting in mid-April, Rory is already eager to build upon this success. Sporting a gleaming smile, Rory shared, "I'll be back in Scotland, where I promote sailing accessibility through my work with RYA Sailability and RYA Scotland's Participation and Development Committee. I hope my efforts will inspire more people to join the sport."

To young sailors looking to start their sailing journey, Rory advises taking every opportunity that comes your way.

"Just take a shot at it!" Rory exclaimed. "Ask questions, seek out knowledge, and don't be afraid to try new things."

The British Hansa Worlds team, consisting of Paul Phillips and Tessa Watkiss (Liberty), Kirsten Pollock and Brett Pearce (Skud), Rory McKinna, Logan Bell, Max Rumball, and Leslie Phillips (303), performed exceptionally well at the championships. The Hansa Class and RYA's Brett Cockayne deserve a round of applause for their support.

In the meantime, keep an eye out for the upcoming WS Inclusion Championships in Oman, where Hansa 303s might make an appearance.

"Rory McKinna's success in the Hansa 303 Worlds showcases his newfound passion for sports, particularly the sport of sailing."

"Ignited by the thrill of his doubles victory, Rory is eager to continue making strides in the world of sports, particularly in promoting sailing accessibility back in Scotland."
