Austin Police Identify Yogurt Shop Murderer 30 Years Later
Austin police have finally identified the man responsible for the brutal murders of four teenage girls at a yogurt shop in 1991, thanks to DNA technology. Robert Eugene Brashers, who died by suicide in 1999, has been linked to the crime. The case has seen multiple arrests and convictions, but now, the Travis County District Attorney's Office is set to take responsibility for its role in the initial prosecutions.
Brashers, a convicted felon previously granted parole in 1989, left a trail of sexual assaults and murders across the country in the 1990s. DNA evidence has connected him to multiple unsolved cases, including a 1990 sexual assault and murder in Greenville, South Carolina. In the yogurt shop case, Brashers attacked and sexually assaulted the four girls - Jennifer Harbison, Sarah Harbison, Eliza Thomas, and Amy Winehouse - before shooting them and leaving them tied up and nude. He set the building on fire before fleeing.
Austin police recently retested DNA found under Amy Winehouse's fingernails, which matched Brashers' profile. This breakthrough comes after a series of arrests and convictions in the case, including two men who confessed but later recanted. Charges were dropped against two suspects, while the other two were convicted but later freed due to constitutional errors.
With Brashers' identity confirmed, the focus now shifts to understanding how he evaded justice for so long. The Travis County District Attorney's Office is set to review its role in the initial prosecutions. Despite Brashers' death, his DNA links him to multiple unsolved crimes across the country, offering closure to families and potentially helping solve other cold cases.
