Piastri, racing for McLaren, triumphed for the third time in a row, while he and teammate Lando Norris aim to unseat Max Verstappen, who has been the Formula 1 champion since 2021. This victory marks Piastri's first three consecutive races for McLaren since the late 1990s - when Mika Häkkinen accomplished the feat with a win at the end of the 1997 season and the first two races of 1998.
Norris currently sits in second place after winning last year's Miami race, with two victories by Verstappen on the same Hard Rock Stadium circuit.
On Sunday, Norris gave it his all, trying to overtake Verstappen early on, but a minor off-track excursion cost him several positions. Despite Piastri seizing the lead from Verstappen on lap 14, Norris fought to the finish, narrowing the gap but ultimately failing to catch up. The race ended with a McLaren one-two finish, making it their best result since 2014.
Piastri's victory extended his lead over Norris to 16 points, while Verstappen is now 32 points behind.
Hard Work Equals Results
"This is just incredible," declared Piastri. "Two years ago in Miami, we were the slowest team. Winning this Grand Prix with over 35 seconds lead is a testament to everyone’s hard work."
The Final Laps
Despite Norris' valiant effort, George Russell (Mercedes) took third place, leaving the two McLaren drivers with nearly 40 seconds ahead of the rest of the pack.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) had his fair share of drama. In the final laps, Hamilton was ordered by Ferrari to let teammate Charles Leclerc pass. Hamilton's frustration was evident as he struggled to catch up, losing time behind Leclerc and airing his grievances over the team radio. However, Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur effectively diffused the situation, explaining that they were testing who was faster and applying the team rule to swap positions.
After the Grand Prix, Hamilton was more philosophical, acknowledging that it was "frustrating," but adding that his comments were more sarcastic than wrathful.
