Aurubis, Europe's copper titan, is pumping an additional €330 million into its Hamburg fortress. The investment includes constructing a cutting-edge precious metals processing plant, worth €300 million, and a €30 million initiative to slash fugitive emissions in copper production.
The Hamburg headquarters is currently undergoing a colossal makeover, with Aurubis AG splashing out over €750 million on various projects. According to Aurubis CEO Roland Harings, this is a testament to the site's importance to the company's smelter network.
"By realizing these projects, we're making a crucial contribution to sustainable, green, and innovative metal production," Harings expressed.
Aurubis' Hamburg site isn't just churning out valuable copper, but it's also playing a critical role in Europe's transition towards eco-friendly metal production.
While Aurubis devalues the worth of strategic metals like nickel and copper by sending them to the recycling plant in Olen, Belgium, the hydrometallurgical processing used in this facility helps secure more metals for European industries, making production greener and more efficient.
Meanwhile, the Industrial Heat expansion project at the Hamburg site aims to provide carbon-neutral heat to over 28,000 Hamburg households, reducing CO2 emissions by an impressive 120,000 tons.
Aurubis is dedicated to remaining ahead of the curve, with over €1.3 billion invested in strategic projects, out of an approved total of €1.7 billion, by the end of the 2024/25 fiscal year. These projects are projected to bring in an additional EBITDA contribution of around €260 million annually.
At its core, Aurubis' mission is to stay at the forefront of sustainable metal production worldwide, maintaining a robust demand for copper products, and committing to a greener future for European industries.
