August Overview of Off-Broadway Shows on Broadway
August is shaping up to be an exciting month for theatre-goers in New York City, with a variety of productions gracing the Off-Broadway stages. Here's a roundup of some of the must-see shows to catch this August.
Elizabeth McGovern is performing in 'Ava: The Secret Conversations', a stage adaptation of Ava Gardner's late-in-life interviews, at City Center until September 14th. Meanwhile, Bill Posley's solo piece, 'The Day I Accidentally Went to War', is being performed at the Soho Playhouse until August 30th. The show spans childhood trauma, basic training, deployment, and the uneasy return home.
Tony nominee Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Obie winner Michael Chernus are starring in Bubba Weiler's debut play, "Well, I'll Let You Go", directed by Jack Serio, from August 1st to 29th at the Space at Irondale. Jordan Kai Burnett and Jonathan Randell Silver are portraying Gilda Radner and Gene Wilder in Cary Gitter's play, "Gene & Gilda", from August 1st to 7th at 59E59.
Conor McPherson's haunting drama, "The Weir", is receiving its fourth production by the Irish Repertory Theatre, from August 1st to 31st at the Irish Repertory Theatre. For those seeking a lighter tone, an 80-minute parody of the 1998 Lindsay Lohan film "The Parent Trap" is being performed as "Ginger Twinsies", from October 1st to 25th at the Orpheum Theatre.
A unique offering is "Rolling Thunder", a jukebox musical revisiting the Vietnam War, being performed from August 1st to 7th at New World Stages. Morgan Bassichis is performing a 70-minute solo show, 'Can I Be Frank?', at the Soho Playhouse from now until September 13th. The show, directed by Tony winner Sam Pinkleton, portrays the late queer comic Frank Maya and blends Maya's original material with Bassichis's wry, self-aware sensibility.
Comedian Josh Sharp is performing a one-man show, "ta-da!", with 2,000 rapid-fire PowerPoint slides, from August 1st to 11th at Greenwich House.
In addition to these shows, Rishi Varma's play, "Sulfur Bottom", set in a decaying home on the edge of industrial sprawl and exploring the quiet devastation of environmental collapse through the story of one family over 40 years, will open at The Theater Center/Jerry Orbach Theater on August 20.
Saheem Ali is directing a star-studded adaptation of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" at the Delacorte Theater, featuring Peter Dinklage, Sandra Oh, and Lupita Nyong’o, among others. The play opens on August 21.
The Animals Speak, the final play in a trilogy exploring the rise of Disney, focusing on Walt Disney’s 1941 goodwill tour of South America and its impact on artist Mary Blair, will open at Wild Project in East Village on August 10.
Lastly, British magician Jamie Allan is making his New York debut with a narrative-driven magic show, 'Amaze', at New World Stages until November 2nd.
This diverse lineup promises a rich theatre experience for audiences, with a mix of contemporary drama, Shakespearean classic, historical narrative, and comedy. Don't miss out on these exciting productions gracing the Off-Broadway stages this August!
