August 18, 2025: Claims of Racism Revealed at DFB Cup Match and Encounter Between Trump and Zelenskyy

In a regrettable turn of events, the DFB-Pokal first-round match between FC Schalke 04 and Lok Leipzig on August 17, 2025, was tainted by racial abuse directed at Schalke's player, Christopher Antwi-Adjei.

During the 13th minute of the game, a home supporter reportedly shouted racist insults, including the "N-word," while Antwi-Adjei was preparing to take a throw-in. The referee briefly halted the game to allow the stadium announcer to urge fans to stop the discriminatory behavior, but some home crowd sections continued to boo Antwi-Adjei every time he touched the ball until the final whistle.

Antwi-Adjei, who was born in Germany and is a Ghana international, later filed a police complaint, and investigations have been launched by both the police and the German Football Association (DFB).

The Schalke club strongly condemned the behavior, with sporting director Frank Baumann expressing support for Antwi-Adjei and the head coach Miron Muslic emphasizing the seriousness of the incident, highlighting that the booing was not just an act of a single individual but widespread among parts of the stadium crowd. The DFB president Bernd Neuendorf stated that the control committee has opened investigations following this and other racist abuse cases in recent German Cup matches, reaffirming their commitment to diversity and respect.

Antwi-Adjei expressed deep disappointment over the abuse, stating that such insults have no place in football or society and hoped the perpetrator would reconsider their actions.

Elsewhere, numerous other developments took place on this day. The CDU has appealed to the federal government regarding the job cuts at Mitteldeutsche Airport AG, which is under financial pressure, leading to the planned elimination of 172 jobs.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met at the White House in Washington. The Forum on Climate Adaptation 2025 took place at the New Town Hall, discussing ways to equip the city and its citizens against the impacts of climate change. The administration is developing a climate adaptation program.

In a lighter note, Oskar Schlemmer's "Triadic Ballet" has been reimagined at the Theater, and Leipzig Takes a Seat, a book, has won its first victory at the Administrative Court in a case regarding freedom of assembly.
