Augsburg police crack down on unsafe driving in surprise checkpoint

On the evening of March 23, 2026, police in Augsburg-Mitte carried out a traffic checkpoint on Riedingerstraße. The operation focused on road safety, vehicle fitness, and driver behaviour. Officers aimed to reduce accident risks through both enforcement and public education.

The checkpoint took place in Oberhausen, with local officers monitoring driver compliance. They checked for proper seat belt use, child restraint systems, and signs of impairment. A total of 34 violations were recorded during the operation.

Among the issues identified, 20 involved inadequate passenger protection. This included unsecured children and adults not wearing seat belts. Seven drivers were found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, violating the Road Traffic Act. Police stressed that securing children correctly and driving responsibly can greatly lower injury risks. The operation formed part of broader efforts to prevent accidents and lessen their impact. However, records show no other similar campaigns in Augsburg-Mitte over the past three years.

The checkpoint highlighted ongoing concerns about road safety in the area. Officers recorded multiple breaches, particularly around passenger protection and impaired driving. Authorities continue to urge drivers to prioritise vehicle safety and responsible behaviour behind the wheel.
