Audience in Stir due to AI-Altered Wizard of Oz, Prior to Its Screening at The Sphere Las Vegas

In the world of entertainment, the much-anticipated modern update of the iconic 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz" is set to premiere at Las Vegas's Sphere on August 28. However, the update has sparked a heated debate among fans and film purists.

The centre of controversy is the AI-enhanced viewings of the movie, which have been criticised for altering the original performances, seen by many as a desecration of the film's artistic integrity. Critics argue that these changes disrespect the source material and raise ethical concerns about modifying the work of deceased artists without consent.

However, supporters, including Lorna Luft (Judy Garland's daughter) and TCM's Ben Mankiewicz, defend the updates as respectful adaptations that bring the classic to new audiences and suit the advanced venue's technology. The experience also features immersive 4D effects like vibrating seats, custom scents, and fake wind, which some find less controversial than the digital alterations.

Despite the controversy, ticket sales for the showings are robust, indicating commercial success. However, specific production cost details for this update remain undisclosed. Sphere Entertainment reported total revenue of $282.7 million for Q2 2025 and projects strong ticket sales, aiming for Sphere Experience revenue around $110 million in Q4 2025. This suggests a substantial investment into the Sphere's overall productions and technology, but a precise figure for the "Wizard of Oz" update itself remains undisclosed.

One of the notable changes in the update is the introduction of Uncle Henry, a character who did not originally appear in the original movie. Additionally, the AI enhancements involve sharpening of colours to create a more vivid viewing experience.

Some fans are not happy with the modern update and alterations to "The Wizard of Oz". However, the film remains an iconic piece of cinema that has remained relevant for nearly a century. The short segment of the new version has already been released, offering a glimpse into the updated world of Oz.

Whether the controversy will subside or intensify as the premiere approaches remains to be seen. For now, the debate continues among fans and critics alike, as they grapple with the question of whether the update maintains the spirit of the original while offering a fresh, immersive experience for modern audiences.
