Audience encouraged to attend the unique 'Barricades' performance scheduled for January 20th
The city of Riga will host a poignant multimedia concert titled "Barricades and Children" on January 20, 2023, at 6:00 PM, in the Riga Cathedral. This event, part of a plan directed by Kārlis Anitens, is a significant part of the city's commemoration of the events of the January 1991 barricades, a pivotal moment in Latvia's struggle for independence.
The concert promises to be an immersive artistic experience, combining music, visuals, and historical narration to honour the courage and sacrifice of those involved. Notable pieces performed during the event include Raimonds Pauls' emotional compositions "Janvāris" (January) and "Balādiņa" (Ballad), which deeply reflect the mood and spirit of that tumultuous period.
The orchestra "Rīga" and organist Aigars Reinis, conducted by Valdis Butāns, will perform a new work by Rihards Dubra, titled "Rītausmu sagaidot." The wind orchestra will also perform Jēkabs Jančevskis' suite from the play "Brands" for the first time. The program also includes Selga Mence's "Kad(e) pārnāksi, bāleliņ" from the cantata "Laika vējos."
The scenography of the concert will include projections created by video artist Tomas Zeļģis, featuring photographs and drawings from the collection of the 1991 barricades museum. These projections will use and bring to life the testimonies of children of that specific time, now in their thirties and forties. Soloist and actress Ieva Segliņa will be part of the performance, reading the memories of witnesses of the time, as the music interacts with their narratives.
Admission to the concert is free of charge and without prior reservation, making it open to all Riga residents and guests of the city.
