A 70-year-old man has been fined and banned from keeping large numbers of animals after admitting to serious neglect. Kevin Maurice Dell pleaded guilty to charges involving the mistreatment of horses and cattle on his properties. The case led to the euthanasia of three animals in poor health.
An investigation revealed severe neglect on Dell’s two lifestyle properties. An animal welfare inspector discovered a nine-year-old racing thoroughbred in an 'extremely poor body condition', requiring euthanasia. The horse had suffered from untreated injuries and a lack of veterinary care.
A dehydrated young heifer and a crossbreed bull calf were also found in critical condition. Both animals were so unwell that they too had to be put down.
Cody Taylor, MPI Auckland district manager, stated that Dell failed to provide timely medical treatment or manage disease among his animals. The court imposed a $9,800 fine for the neglect. Additionally, Dell has been disqualified from owning or caring for more than two horses and 10 cows for the next two years.
It remains unclear who was responsible for the animals on Dell’s properties over the past two years.
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is urging the public to report suspected animal cruelty. Anyone with concerns can contact the MPI animal welfare complaints line on 0800 008 333. The case highlights the legal consequences of failing to meet basic animal care standards.
