Aubrey Plaza describes her mourning as akin to a terrifying horror film experience
In a candid conversation on the podcast "Good Hang" with Amy Poehler, actress Aubrey Plaza opened up about her grief following the death of her husband, Jeff Baena, who passed away by suicide in early January at the age of 47.
Plaza, best known for her role in "The White Lotus," updated her well-being seven months after Baena's tragic demise. She described her feelings as a daily struggle, comparing her grief to the sci-fi horror film "The Gorge" (2025).
In "The Gorge," two operatives guard a mountain gorge housing monsters. Plaza used this analogy to convey how her grief felt like an ever-present, ominous force. Although she called it a "dumb analogy" in a joking manner, she meant it seriously to describe the shape-shifting, looming nature of her emotions following the loss.
"The Gorge" stars Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy and is available on Apple TV+ since February.
Plaza and Baena were married in 2020 after nearly a decade together. A few days after Baena's death was announced, Plaza released a statement asking for privacy. When asked about her emotional state, Plaza responded that she is happy to be there, functioning, and moving around in the world again.
At the time of his death, Plaza and Baena were reportedly separated. The specific title of the horror movie Aubrey Plaza compared her grief to was "The Gorge."
