Former ISA Directors and Employees Oppose Zini's Appointment as Shin Bet Head

A heated debate is unfolding in Israel over the potential appointment of David Zini as the new head of the Shin Bet, the country's security agency. The Grunis Committee, responsible for vetting candidates for top security positions, is expected to issue an advisory opinion on the matter.

The controversy began when four former directors of the ISA, including Nadav Argaman, Ami Ayalon, Yoram Cohen, and Carmi Gillon, submitted objections to the Grunis Committee regarding Zini's nomination. This was followed by a letter from 260 former ISA employees, also expressing opposition to Zini's appointment.

However, not everyone is against Zini's candidacy. Brig. Gen. (res.) Ofer Winter, a prominent figure in Israeli security, wrote a letter to the Grunis Committee in support of Zini. Winter also took to Facebook to defend Zini's nomination, stating, "It's time to stop appointing messianic people to the highest positions in the country", a remark aimed at the political left.

The person who has publicly expressed support for Zini's candidacy remains unnamed in the provided information.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recommended Zini for the role and forwarded his name to the Grunis Committee. The opposition to Zini's appointment has been framed by Yehoda Vald, CEO of the Religious Zionism party, as ideologically driven on social media.

As the Grunis Committee prepares to issue its advisory opinion, the debate over Zini's potential appointment as the new head of the Shin Bet continues to intensify.
