Atletico Madrid secures Alex Baena for a five-year deal.
Alex Baena, a 23-year-old Spanish midfielder, has completed his move from Villarreal to Atlético Madrid in a reported transfer fee of around €50 million, with potential bonuses bringing the total to €55 million.
Baena, born in Roquetas de Mar, Almería, on July 20, 2001, showcased his skills for Villarreal since his debut against Real Sociedad on July 13, 2020. Over the course of his tenure, he made a total of 148 appearances, scoring 26 goals and providing 40 assists across all competitions.
During the 2024-25 season, Baena was a standout performer, registering a total of 16 goal involvements (7 goals + 9 assists) and creating 95 chances in La Liga—the highest in the league by a significant margin, outperforming even Atlético’s Antoine Griezmann who created 48.
A versatile attacking midfielder, Baena is known for his quick movement, attacking mindset, and strong decision-making in complex situations. He is expected to play a major creative and offensive role in Atlético’s squad under coach Diego Simeone.
Baena's career milestones include coming through Villarreal’s youth academy, spending the 2021/22 season on loan at Girona before establishing himself at Villarreal, and being part of the Villarreal team that won the 2020-21 UEFA Europa League.
