Atlanta airport chaos as storms ground hundreds of flights
Heavy rain and thunderstorms have disrupted travel across Georgia, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport facing significant delays. Over 600 flights were held up, and eight cancellations occurred as a cold front moved through the region. Airport operations were temporarily halted under a ground stop order early in the morning.
The downpours began around 9 a.m. north of I-20, lasting until lunchtime. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning covered ten counties, including Cherokee, DeKalb, and Fulton. The storm system also triggered a tornado watch in neighbouring Randolph County, Alabama, lasting until 7 p.m.
The storm system caused widespread disruption, with hundreds of flights delayed and several cancelled. While the rain is expected to taper off by late evening, travellers are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport. Captain Balts and airport staff remain on alert as recovery efforts continue.
