Athletics Championship Final Qualification: Defending champion Neeraj advances, Weber wins Group A, Jakub fails to secure automatic qualification automatically
In the world of athletics, Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has been making waves. Following his historic gold medal win at the World Championships in Budapest in 2023, Chopra has been on a roll.
The Doha Diamond League in May 2025 saw Chopra achieve a personal best and cross the 90-metre mark for the first time ever with a throw of 90.23m. This remarkable feat came just a month after he returned to winning ways with back-to-back titles at the Paris Diamond League and Ostrava Golden Spike, where he threw 88.16m and 85.29m respectively.
Prior to these victories, Chopra won the Potch Invitational in April 2025 in South Africa. He also secured a second place in the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland in the same month. In both events, Chopra eclipsed the qualification mark of 84.50m, with a throw of 84.85m in his first attempt at the Polish event.
However, the finalists in the men's javelin throw at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo and their final distances are not publicly available as of now.
Chopra, a two-time Olympic medallist, qualified for the final of the men's javelin throw event at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo. He finished third in Group A of the event.
Other notable competitors include Germany's Julian Weber, who qualified for the final with a towering effort of 87.21m. Poland's Dawid Wegner also confirmed his seat in the final with a personal best attempt of 85.67m.
Meanwhile, another Indian athlete, Sachin Yadav, improved his initial attempt of 80.16m to 83.67m in his second try and remained in touching distance of reaching the final.
Chopra's arch-rival, Jakub Vadlejch, a strong contender for the gold, missed the automatic qualification mark by a whisker, finishing fourth with a season-best attempt of 84.11m.
As the World Athletics Championships approach, all eyes will be on Neeraj Chopra as he chases a hat-trick of medals. His performance so far this season suggests he is in prime form, and with his unyielding determination and skill, he is sure to give a tough fight to the other contenders.
