Athletico's latest signing, Euller, affirmatively identifies with the club and reiterates his previous sentiment of not wanting to face him: 'Prepare for a Thousand'
New and Improved Article
Hailing from Felixlândia, Minas Gerais, Euller, fondly known as "The Wind's Son," embarked on his football journey back in 1988 at América. In 1995, he landed at Atlético, a club he'd always adored and dreamed of playing for. His very first encounter with Atlético was enchanting, as he watched them battle it out against Flamengo at the Mineirão in 1977.
Zico, his idol, graced the field that day, but Euller found himself mesmerized by the Galo's raucous supporters. "Entering the Mineirão for the very first time to witness Atlético vs Flamengo was a mind-blowing experience," he reminisced, still getting goosebumps just recalling it.
Remarkably, the start of Euller's professional career with Atléticocoincided with a friendly against Flamengo. As a newcomer to the team, he appeared alongside illustrious players like Taffarel. The Rubro-Negro, celebrating their centenary, championed Romário that day. Regrettably for them, the outcome favored the Wind's Son.
"It was Flamengo's centenary, everyone was impressive, the Mineirão was packed to the brim. Then I scored the third goal, the 3-2 winner," he stated, radiating with emotion. "To hear my name and my nickname sung by the crowd for the first time – 'Son of the Wind! Eeu-eu-eu-Euller!' – was a feeling I couldn't describe," he added, overwhelmed by nostalgia.
Looking back on his days with Atlético, Euller considered it a divine destiny: "Life doesn't happen by chance, but by a purpose. I had that privilege. Donning this shirt was a purpose. I can only be grateful for the sacrifices it took to get me there."
"I didn't want to be the scapegoat of Atlético's potential relegation"
Leaving Atlético in 1997, Euller left his indelible mark on Palmeiras and Vasco. In 2004, he represented São Caetano, who were experiencing a remarkable historic moment. However, the tragic death of Serginho, a team player, during a match against São Paulo, led the ABC Paulista club to suffer punishment, losing 24 points in the Brazilian championship that year.
Serginho's demise was the saddest moment of Euller's career. Despite the points being deducted, São Caetano refused to slip up, a fate that befell Atlético that year. Ironically, the two teams faced off in the final round. Atlético had to triumph to avoid relegation, and Euller felt he shouldn't be on the field.
Given his strong emotional connection to Atlético, Euller hesitated to take part in the match. Despite São Caetano still battling to recover the lost points, which could have allowed them to compete in the Libertadores, he relented. Unfortunately, his heart wasn't entirely in it.
"I didn't want to become the face of Atlético's possible relegation," he admitted. "Playing with my mind a million miles away, thinking they'd better not pass the ball to me, I got subbed off at halftime when they realized I wasn't delivering my best effort," he shared, recounting the memorable event.
The following year, Euller returned to Atlético, which, unluckily, got relegated to Série B. Despite being a part of that difficult period for the club, Euller viewed it as a valuable learning year. The Galo never repeated the same mistakes, such as constantly changing coaches and players with each new management.
