Tokyo 2021: Faith Kipyegon Secures Historic Fourth World Title in Women's 1,500 Meters

In a thrilling finale at the National Stadium in Tokyo, Kenya's Faith Kipyegon clinched an unprecedented fourth World Championship title in the women's 1,500 meters race.

As the bell rang for the final lap, the crowd rose to their feet, eagerly anticipating the climactic showdown. Kipyegon, who had taken the lead early on, never looked back, extending her lead coming off the bend into the home straight.

The race began with a tightly-bunched pack, but as the final lap approached, the field was stretched out. A spurt down the back straight widened Kipyegon's lead, setting the stage for an exciting finish.

Behind her, a close battle for the silver and bronze positions ensued. Dorcus Ewoi of Uganda and Australia's Jessica Hull found themselves neck and neck, with Ewoi eventually edging out Hull to secure the silver medal with a time of 3:54.92. Hull claimed the bronze with a time of 3:55.16.

Kipyegon's winning time was 3min 52.15sec, a testament to her dominance in the event. Her victory in Tokyo matches the record held by Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj, who also won four World Championship titles in the men's 1,500 meters.

Kipyegon, a three-time Olympic champion over the 1,500 meters distance, has now added another impressive accolade to her illustrious career. The fourth World Championship in the women's 1,500 meters before her victory in Tokyo was won by Kipyegon herself in 2023 in Budapest. She had also won in 2017 and 2022, making Tokyo her pursuit for a fourth title.

As Ewoi's arms were raised in triumph, the crowd erupted in applause, recognising the historic moment they had just witnessed. Kipyegon's victory in the women's 1,500 meters race will undoubtedly go down as one of the most memorable moments in the event's history.
