Neeraj Chopra's Struggles at the World Athletics Championship

Neeraj Chopra, the Indian javelin thrower who won an Olympic gold medal in 2021, faced challenges at the World Athletics Championship held in Tokyo on August 7, 2022. The competition, held under a new format at the Japan National Stadium, saw Chopra finish eighth.

Chopra's journey at the championship began with a strong first throw of 83.65m. However, things took a turn as he fouled his third and final attempts. His fourth throw measured 82.86m, but it wasn't enough to propel him to a higher rank.

The Indian athlete struggled from his first throw and looked frustrated after each passing attempt. His back issues, which he had been dealing with before the competition, may have contributed to his performance. Chopra revealed that he had to undergo rehabilitation due to these issues and couldn't train for two weeks leading up to the championship.

Despite not feeling fully fit, Chopra pushed himself to compete. He improved his throw in his second attempt to 84.03m, but it wasn't enough to move him up the rankings. His elimination in the fifth round marked the first time since 2021 that Chopra finished outside the top two in a competition.

Trained by Klaus Bartonietz, Chopra had previously won gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the 2023 World Championships, and the Asian Games 2023. Bartonietz coached Chopra until October 1, 2024. Chopra mentioned that he didn't train much before the World Athletics Championship.

Despite the disappointing result, Chopra remains optimistic. He plans to learn from his performance at the World Athletics Championship and bounce back next season. Chopra's Olympic gold medal remains a testament to his talent and determination, and fans eagerly await his return to form.
