Athletic star Fred Kerley participates in Enhanced Games, following weeks of provisional ban in Olympic competition
In an unprecedented move, double Olympic sprint medallist Fred Kerley has announced his participation in the inaugural Enhanced Games. As the first track athlete and the first American man to join the controversial event, Kerley expressed his excitement about the opportunity to break the world record.
The Enhanced Games, which permits athletes to use performance-enhancing drugs that are typically banned in official competition, has been met with criticism from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and health experts. WADA previously slammed the event as 'dangerous and irresponsible.'
Kerley, who won the 100m silver at the Tokyo Games in 2021 and the 2022 world championship, has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit for whereabouts failures. Despite this, he remains undeterred, stating that the Enhanced Games offers him the chance to dedicate all his energy to breaking records.
Joining Kerley in the Enhanced Games are several elite swimmers, including Olympic silver medallist Ben Proud, who becomes one of the first British athletes to sign on for the event. However, Australian swimmer Kyle Chalmers turned down millions to join, citing concerns about the potential health risks associated with the event.
The Enhanced Games is facing numerous legal challenges, having launched an anti-trust lawsuit against World Aquatics, USA Swimming, and WADA for up to $US800 million ($A1.2 billion). The inaugural event is scheduled to take place in Las Vegas in May 2026.
Despite the controversy surrounding the Enhanced Games, Kerley remains undeterred, focusing on the potential benefits the event could bring to his career. The future of the event remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the Enhanced Games is set to shake up the world of sports.
