Athletic star EJ Obiena secures third place in comeback competition after extended absence
Filipino Pole Vault Star EJ Obiena Aims for Third World Championships Medal
EJ Obiena, the Filipino pole vault star, has returned to the international tour after a two-month hiatus, making a strong comeback by winning bronze at the World Athletics Continental Tour in Beijing, China, on September 7. This victory comes as the men's pole vault qualification for the upcoming World Athletics Championships, scheduled to start in a few days, is set for September 13.
Obiena's triumph in Beijing followed his silver win at the 2023 World Championships and his impressive performance at the Meeting Madrid in Spain, where he cleared a height of 5.80 meters. However, in the Beijing competition, his third and final attempt at 5.85 meters resulted in a foul.
Despite this setback, Obiena remains determined to win a third straight medal in the world championships. He will be participating in the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, and will then head to the Atletang Ayala World Pole Vault Challenge at the Ayala Triangle Gardens in Makati from September 20 to 21.
In the Beijing competition, Zhong Tao, a home bet, won gold with a 5.75-meter clearance. Zhong edged Cole Walsh of the USA via countback to secure the gold medal. In the same competition, Obiena cleared 5.65 meters.
Our sources confirm that there were no search results providing information about the winner of the pole vault discipline at the World Athletics Continental Tour competition on Sunday, September 7, in Shanghai.
As the World Athletics Championships approach, all eyes are on Obiena as he continues his pursuit of another medal. Stay tuned for updates on his journey.
