Athletic sprinter Fred Kerley faces provisional suspension due to repeated violations in the anti-doping 'location reporting' protocols.
US Olympic Sprinter Fred Kerley Faces Provisional Suspension and Legal Trouble
Fred Kerley, the 2022 100m World Champion and two-time Olympic medalist, is facing a double challenge this year. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has provisionally suspended Kerley for alleged "whereabouts failures" under the sport's anti-doping rules. Meanwhile, he is also embroiled in a legal case following an incident in Florida.
Kerley, who won the bronze medal in the 100 meters at the Paris Games last year and the Olympic silver medal in the same event at the Tokyo Games, has announced his intention to appeal the provisional suspension. His lawyers claim he is innocent of the charges and believe one or more of the alleged missed tests should be set aside due to non-negligence or unreasonable location attempts by the Doping Control Officer.
The suspension was announced by the AIU, but specific dates or details of the missed tests have not been publicly disclosed. The appeal process will involve presenting evidence and arguments to an appointed hearing panel, which will decide whether the provisional suspension stands or is overturned.
In a separate incident, Kerley was charged with punching a woman in Florida in May. The Miami Beach police officer involved in the incident was not related to the one leading to his suspension. The woman who was punched is a hurdler who also competed in the Olympics. Kerley has not commented further on the Florida charge out of respect for the legal process.
This development comes amid a difficult period for Kerley, who has earned six medals at the track and field world championships. He looks forward to presenting his case to the appointed hearing panel and contesting the allegation of violating anti-doping rules related to whereabouts failures.
