Athletic Madrid Welcomes Johnny Cardoso; Djordje Petrovic Joins Bournemouth Football Club
AFC Bournemouth has made a splash this summer with the signings of two promising talents, Johnny Cardoso and Djordje Petrovic.
Johnny Cardoso, a 23-year-old American midfielder, has recently transferred to Atletico Madrid from Real Betis for a fee of approximately €30 million, signing a five-year contract until 2030. Cardoso, who was born in Denville, New Jersey, has made a name for himself in Europe, earning 22 caps for the United States Men’s National Team since his debut in November 2020. He has also won the CONCACAF Nations League in both 2023 and 2024.
At Real Betis, Cardoso made 65 appearances, scoring 6 goals and providing 3 assists. He played a pivotal role in the club’s sixth-place league finish and their run to the Conference League final, where they ultimately lost to Chelsea. His performances in big matches—notably against Atlético Madrid—earned him attention from manager Diego Simeone, who praised his energy, timing, and tenacity.
Before joining Atletico Madrid, Cardoso spent time in the youth systems of Avaí, Criciúma, and Internacional in Brazil. At Internacional, he made his senior debut on 15 September 2019. In total, he made 144 appearances for Internacional before moving to Betis.
Djordje Petrovic, a 25-year-old goalkeeper, has also joined AFC Bournemouth on a five-year contract. Petrovic impressed on loan at Strasbourg during the 2024-2025 season, helping the team finish seventh in Ligue 1 and secure a UEFA Conference League berth. Prior to Strasbourg, Petrovic was a part of the Strasbourg team that finished seventh in Ligue 1 and secured a UEFA Europa League berth.
Petrovic expressed his desire to grow and play at the best level in his interview after signing for Bournemouth. He aims to help the Bournemouth team get results, improve every day, and become a better player.
Adrian Truffert and Junior Kroupi are the other two major signings for Bournemouth this summer. The new signings are expected to strengthen the team and contribute to a successful season.
