In a significant development, Daniyal Akhmetov has announced his early resignation as the head of the Light Athletics Federation of Kazakhstan. The announcement, made by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Kazakhstan, comes after Akhmetov's term as the akim (governor) of the East Kazakhstan region (VKO) expired in the summer of 2023.

Akhmetov's tenure as the head of the Light Athletics Federation began in 2018, following his distinguished career in public service. He has held positions such as the akim of Pavlodar region, prime minister, minister of defense, and since November 2014, he has headed the East Kazakhstan region.

During his time as the head of the Light Athletics Federation, Akhmetov's term was extended twice - first in 2017 for an additional five years, and then in 2022 for an additional year. This extension allowed him to continue his work towards elevating light athletics to a new level and strengthening its popularity on the international stage.

Prior to his resignation, Akhmetov briefed Minister Yerbol Myrzakhmetov on his work at a federation meeting. Myrzakhmetov expressed his gratitude for Akhmetov's contribution to the development of light athletics, highlighting the sport's significant role in Kazakhstan. With over 360,000 citizens professionally engaged in light athletics, it is a popular sport in the country.

As of now, no information has been provided about a replacement for Akhmetov as the head of the Light Athletics Federation or the akim of VKO. Akhmetov, however, has already moved on, taking up the position of chairman of Kazakhmys Corporation after his tenure as chairman of the Athletics Federation.

Akhmetov reached the official retirement age in 2017, but his dedication to public service and his passion for light athletics led him to continue serving in these roles. His departure from the position of akim of VKO was not affected by his term as the head of the Light Athletics Federation.

The departure of Daniyal Akhmetov marks a new chapter in the leadership of Kazakhstan's Light Athletics Federation and the East Kazakhstan region. His contributions to both areas will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact, and his legacy will continue to inspire future leaders in these fields.
