Fred Kerley, the 2022 World champion and two-time Olympic 100m medalist, has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for whereabouts failures.

Suspension Details

The suspension came about due to Kerley missing three anti-doping tests or filing failures over a 12-month span. This type of violation can result in a penalty of one to two years. The AIU, an independent body responsible for managing integrity issues in athletics, including doping and non-doping violations, made the decision.

Contestation of Allegation

Despite the suspension, Kerley plans to contest the allegation. His lawyer, Howard L. Jacobs, has stated that Kerley believes one or more of the alleged missed tests should be set aside. This could be because Kerley was not negligent or because the Doping Control Officer did not take reasonable steps to locate him at his designated location. Kerley will not comment further until he presents his case to the appointed hearing panel, out of respect for the process.

Context

This suspension is not the only challenge Kerley has faced in 2025. Earlier in the year, he was involved in a legal incident. Recently, he missed the USATF Championships, citing personal hurdles. His last competition was a month ago at the Grand Sprint Series in Norwalk, California.

Kerley's attorney also stated that in some cases, the Doping Control Officer did not do what was reasonable under the circumstances to locate Kerley at his designated location.

In a post on his social media platform, Kerley wrote that 2025 has presented many hurdles, suggesting that the suspension is just one of the challenges he has faced this year.
