Julian Weber, the German javelin thrower and favourite for gold, finished fifth in the Athletics World Championships in Tokyo with a distance of 86.11 meters. Weber's quest for a medal at a major global championship continues, as he has yet to secure one despite narrowly missing the podium at the World Championships in Eugene in 2022 and Budapest the following year, as well as at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 and finishing sixth in Paris last year.

Weber's performance was affected by a recent kidney infection, which weakened him in the weeks leading up to the World Championships. Despite demonstrating his prowess in qualifying by easily clearing 87.21 meters, Weber struggled with his throws from the start of the competition and repeatedly shook his head. His coach, Burkhard Looks, advised him to focus on involving his legs and not just his arms, but this did not help his performance.

Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago won the javelin throw event with a distance of 88.16 meters, followed closely by Anderson Peters from Grenada in second place. Curtis Thompson from the USA finished third.

Meanwhile, in the high jump event, both Christina Honsel (28) and Imke Onnen (31) qualified for the final. Honsel's personal best remained elusive, as she fell short by 45 centimeters, and Onnen also failed to reach her qualifying distance due to the rainy conditions in Tokyo.

In the triple jump event, Caroline Joyeux made her World Championship final debut, finishing 10th with a distance of 13.61 meters. Leyanis Pérez Hernández from Cuba took the gold with a distance of 14.94 meters. Joyeux fell short of her personal best by 45 centimeters and her qualifying distance by 19 centimeters in the final.

Weber's European Championship title was won three years ago in Munich, and he will be hoping to secure a medal at future global events, starting with the upcoming World Championships in Budapest next year.
