West Delaware High School Kicks Off Fall Sports Season
The West Delaware High School community is gearing up for the 2021 Fall Sports Season, with the annual West Delaware Fall Sports Preview Show set to take place at the Silver Bowl on Brown Field. The event, hosted by Sports Director Jon Swisher, will mark the first official broadcast of the new season.
The Fall Sports season commenced on a specified date for High School Football, Volleyball, and Cross Country. The West Delaware Football team, fresh from a successful 2020 season, will be looking to build on their Class 3A state semifinal finish, where they triumphed with a score of 39-7.
However, the team has faced some changes during the off-season, with the loss of 21 seniors. Despite this, coach Brett Mather, who is starting his 30th season at West Delaware High School's Volleyball team, remains optimistic about the returning players leading the charge.
The Hawks Volleyball team will begin its season at the Independence Invite on the 30th. Meanwhile, West Delaware Football will play its first game of the season against Marion on Brown Field on the 29th, following a scrimmage against Western Dubuque prior to the first game.
Last season, West Delaware Football recorded a 5-4 win-loss record, with a combined loss of 23 points. Eight seniors from the team have graduated, leaving a void that the new players will need to fill.
Despite the losses, coach Mather is confident about the team's potential. He emphasized the valuable experience gained by several seniors during the previous season, which will undoubtedly benefit the current squad.
