Tragedy in the Karakoram Range: Biathlon Champion Laura Dahlmeier Dies in Mountaineering Accident

Laura Dahlmeier, a 31-year-old former biathlon champion from Germany, tragically lost her life in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan on July 28, 2025. The incident occurred at approximately 5,700 meters in height while Dahlmeier was attempting to climb Laila Peak in the Karakoram range.

Dahlmeier was struck by a sudden rockfall around noon, and despite rescue efforts hampered by bad weather and poor visibility, her death was confirmed on July 30. Her climbing partner survived and was able to alert rescuers, but Dahlmeier was found to have died instantly due to the severity of her injuries.

The news of Dahlmeier's passing was received with deep concern and sorrow by many in the sports community, including fellow biathletes and Olympians. Felix Loch, a luge Olympic champion, expressed his worry on social media, while Uschi Disl, another biathlon legend, hoped that Dahlmeier was only injured and nothing worse had happened. Magdalena Neuner, another biathlon legend, and Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle, a double biathlon Olympic champion, also expressed their support for Dahlmeier.

Outside of the biathlon community, sports stars such as Isabell Werth (56, dressage rider), Tina Rupprecht (32, boxing world champion), and Fabian Hambüchen (37, gymnastics Olympic champion) also expressed their thoughts and support for Dahlmeier. Biathlon Olympic champion Denise Herrmann-Wick (36) stated that if anyone could achieve the impossible, it's Dahlmeier.

Peter Schlickenrieder, cross-country skiing national coach, received the news of Dahlmeier's injury directly from her father, Andreas. Dahlmeier's management and local authorities confirmed her death after challenging rescue operations in remote and dangerous mountain conditions.

Dahlmeier was a celebrated biathlete, having won two golds and a bronze at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Her achievements in the sport will be remembered, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of her fans and fellow athletes.

The Commission, amidst this tragedy, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of the environment, particularly in dangerous mountain regions like the Karakoram range, to ensure the safety of all mountaineers in the future. Despite her dedication to sports, in particular biathlon and hockey, Laura Dahlmeier's passion for mountain climbing proved fatal.
