Athletes Rojas and McLaughlin-Levrone aiming for gold at the world championships
In the upcoming World Athletics Championships, several athletes are poised to make a significant impact, with some aiming to break records and defend titles.
In the Women's 800 meters, Audrey Werro, a 21-year-old Swiss athlete, is a contender for the title. Werro recently won the Diamond League final in Zurich, indicating her impressive form. Notably, Keely Hodgkinson, the defending champion who won the event last year, is also in the race. Hodgkinson returned to the track in August after a year's hiatus due to three hamstring injuries. Winning the World title would mean more to Hodgkinson than the Olympic gold.
Hodgkinson has already posted the fastest time this year, 1min 54.74sec, in the Silesia Diamond League meet. However, she admitted that this year has been challenging for her. Georgia Hunter-Bell, an Olympic 1500m bronze medallist, is also competing in the Women's 800 meters, adding another layer of competition.
In the Women's 400 meters, Syrah McLaughlin-Levrone's presence has revived the event. McLaughlin-Levrone set a new American record of 48.29sec in the semi-final, a time that suggests a potential threat to the world record of 47.60sec set by Marita Koch. Her performance has undeniably made her a formidable competitor. Marileidy Paulino and Salwa Eid Naser are expected to challenge McLaughlin-Levrone in the final.
Meanwhile, in the Women's Triple Jump, Yulimar Rojas has the chance to win the world title and defend her title after missing the 2021 Olympics due to injury. Rojas qualified for the final with a season's best jump of 14.49 meters. Leyanis Perez Hernandez, the bronze medallist from two years ago who missed the Paris Games due to injury, is also a contender for the title. Rojas is aiming for a record-extending fifth successive world title. Yargelis Savigne, the 2009 Women's Triple Jump world champion, is another athlete to watch in this event.
These championships promise to be an exciting display of athletic prowess, with several athletes aiming to make history and break records. The competition is fierce, and every event is shaping up to be a thrilling spectacle.
