In Ilocos Norte, Philippines, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. inaugurated the Palarong Pambansa, an annual competition showcasing the nation's top elementary and high school athletes. Marcos expressed his hope that this event would foster the next generation of Filipino sports champions, who might one day represent the country in prestigious tournaments like the Asian Games and the Olympics.

During his speech at the Ferdinand E. Marcos Memorial Stadium in Laoag City on Saturday, May 24th, Marcos encouraged the participants to aim high and work diligently towards their goals, citing prominent athletes such as Manny Pacquiao, Hidilyn Diaz, Carlos Yulo, Aira Villegas, Nesthy Petecio, EJ Obiena, and Alex Eala as examples of what could be achieved.

The Philippines is currently experiencing a golden era in sports, as demonstrated by its impressive performances in the last two Olympiads. Weightlifting heroine Hidilyn Diaz, for instance, brought home the country's first-ever Olympic gold medal in 2021, with boxers Nesthy Petecio, Aira Villegas, and others adding to the country's tally with their respective medals. Carlos Yulo followed in Diaz's footsteps in 2024 by becoming the Philippines' first-ever Olympic double gold medalist, triumphing in the floor exercise and vault in the artistic gymnastics competitions of the Paris Games.

Marcos encouraged the young athletes to keep pursuing their dreams, advising them to focus on training, studying, respecting their parents, and maintaining their health. He also emphasized the government's support for sports endeavors.

Over 15,000 delegates from 20 athletic associations, regional delegations, the National Academy of Sports, and Philippine Overseas Schools are participating in the week-long competition featuring 34 sports. The Palarong Pambansa will conclude on May 31st.
