Germany Suffers First Defeat in EuroBasket 2022, but Secures Bronze Medal

The German basketball team experienced their first setback in the EuroBasket 2022 tournament, losing to hosts Slovenia in a test match, but they bounced back to secure a bronze medal finish.

In the closely contested game, Slovenia's Luka Dončić scored 19 points, while Germany's NBA pros Franz Wagner and David Kramer were the top scorers for the German team with 18 points each. Despite Wagner's early foul trouble, which limited him to 17:33 minutes on the court, Germany maintained a competitive edge throughout the game.

The first quarter ended with Germany leading by 3 points (29:26), but Slovenia increased their lead in the second quarter to 10 points (49:39). Many foul calls disrupted the rhythm of the game, but Germany still led at halftime (53:48).

However, Wagner picked up his fifth foul midway through the third quarter and had to sit out the rest of the game. Despite this setback, Germany remained in control without the NBA star from the Orlando Magic. The world champions also had to do without the injured Maodo Lo and Daniel Theis.

The German team had prepared for the tournament in a training camp in Malaga, working hard for about a week. Despite the loss, the strain was not noticeable in the selection of the German Basketball Federation.

In the semifinals, Germany faced France and put up a strong fight, but ultimately lost 80:83. However, they recovered to secure the bronze medal after beating Poland.

Dennis Schröder was a crucial point guard for Germany after rejoining the team. Johannes Thiemann (PF) and Tibor Pleiß (C) were important frontcourt players, while Andreas Obst and Maodo Lo contributed offensively from the guard/wing positions.

Germany showed resilience in high-level matches, including wins over France, Bosnia, and Lithuania, and a quarterfinal victory against Greece led by Giannis Antetokounmpo. The team's strong performances included a hard-fought double overtime win over Lithuania and progressing to the semifinals for the first time in 17 years.

Schröder and his teammates were noted for strong shooting percentages, averaging around 49.4% on two-pointers and 41.9% on three-pointers throughout the tournament, indicating solid offensive efficiency overall.

In summary, Dennis Schröder was the star guard, supported by major frontcourt contributors like Johannes Thiemann and Tibor Pleiß, and key shooters such as Andreas Obst, in Germany’s EuroBasket 2022 campaign that included a tough defeat against Slovenia in a group-stage test match but ended successfully with a bronze medal finish.
