Athletes from a hundred strong lineup contended for prizes in a chess tournament competition

The mining settlement of Novoshakhtinsky recently hosted an international chess tournament, marking the 40th anniversary of the renowned 'Shatranj' chess club. The event, sponsored by LLC 'Primorskugol', attracted 100 chess enthusiasts from across the region, with ages ranging from 7 to 78.

Notable athletes such as Dmitry Batsanin and Oleg Rychkov, along with young talents like Dmitry Li from the Novoshakhtinsk Chess School, participated in the two-day competition. Li, who achieved the candidate master norm in rapid chess in a previous regional tournament, emerged victorious in the youth category.

Maxim Shchukin was the overall tournament winner, while Vardane Melikyan secured first place in the under-18 group. The competition was organized in a Swiss system format with nine rounds, ensuring a fair and challenging experience for all participants.

In addition to the thrilling chess matches, the event saw special awards presented to the veterans of Primorye's chess movement. The company 'Primorskugol' and the Melnichenko Fund also provided significant support to young talents, with LLC 'Primorskugol' awarding medals, cups, and cash prizes to the winners in each age group.

The event was not just about competition. All participants were treated to free refreshments, tea, and coffee, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The Novoshakhtinsk Chess Club, renowned beyond the Mikhailovsky municipal district, continues to nurture chess talent, with notable alumni including Dmitry Batsanin and Vitaly Bachin.

The establishment of the only Grossmeister school from the Urals to Sakhalin within the Novoshakhtinsk Chess Club is a testament to its enduring influence on the chess community. The tournament, which took place in this historic setting, was a fitting celebration of the 'Shatranj' chess club's four decades of contributions to the world of chess.
