Athletes Brad Gushue, a skilled Canadian curler, announces his retirement following the conclusion of the upcoming season.

In a heartfelt announcement, two-time Olympic medallist Brad Gushue has revealed his decision to retire from competitive curling after the upcoming season. Gushue, a six-time Brier champion and five-time world championship medallist, has achieved most of the goals he set for himself in his illustrious career.

Gushue, who won gold in 2006 and bronze in 2022, will be remembered for his dominance in the domestic and international curling scene. After winning his first Canadian championship in 2017 in his hometown of St. John's, Gushue's teams were favourites in every competition that followed.

For the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, Italy, Gushue's team, consisting of Mark Nichols, E.J. Harnden, and Geoff Walker, has pre-qualified for the Montana's Brier in St. John's. The same team is also in the eight-team men's field at the Olympic trials in Halifax from Nov. 22 through 30.

Gushue's retirement will impact his team members both on and off the ice. In a video, Gushue expressed gratitude to his team for their commitment, friendship, and drive. He admitted that this decision was not easy for him, as he loves curling and has struggled with leaving it behind.

Despite his retirement, Gushue's team is ready to compete in the upcoming season, aiming to leave it all on the ice. Gushue, however, will miss curling more than he can express. He also mentioned that he has missed several family milestones due to his curling career and does not want to miss any more.

This report was first published on Sept. 17, 2025, by The Canadian Press. A previous version of this report incorrectly stated that Gushue had won six world championship medals, including one gold and five bronze. This version corrects that error.

As Gushue embarks on this new chapter of his life, he leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered in the annals of Canadian curling history. His team, determined to make him proud, will strive to achieve the ultimate goal - representing Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
