World Athletics Championships 2025: New Zealand Shines, Duplantis Breaks Record

The 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo saw a mix of drama, excitement, and history-making moments. One of the standout performances came from New Zealand, who clinched their first-ever world track gold in the 3000m steeplechase event.

Geordie Beamish, the New Zealand athlete, emerged victorious in the steeplechase, finishing with a time of 8 minutes and 33.88 seconds. His compatriot, Soufiane El Bakkali, crossed the line just behind him, timing 8:33.95. The two athletes finished the race so closely that it could be considered a photo finish.

Beamish's win came as a surprise, as he almost did not qualify for the final due to falling in the heats. However, he managed to rally and win the event by a hair's breadth. El Bakkali, on the other hand, was distraught after finishing second, having predicted a gold medal for himself.

In another historic moment, New Zealand also won gold in the 3000m steeplechase event, marking their first-ever world track gold.

Meanwhile, in the pole vault event, Armand Duplantis, a Swedish athlete, broke the world record for the 15th time, achieving a height of 6.3m. Duplantis celebrated his victory by jumping into the stands and sharing a passionate kiss with his fiancee, Desire Inglander, before embracing his parents.

Duplantis's win in the pole vault event made him the current champion in his event at the World Athletics Championships. Camryn Rogers, a Canadian athlete, also retained her title in the women's hammer event, charging into the stands to embrace her team after her win.

Unfortunately, Cole Hocker was disqualified in the men's 1,500m event. Britain could still win the men's 1,500m for a third successive time, with three finalists all from Scotland.

In the 100m hurdles event, Ditaji Kambundji, a Swiss athlete, won the event, giving her country their first medal in the hurdles. Masai Russell, who had predicted she might break the world record, trailed in fourth.

Emmanouil Karalis took silver in the pole vault event with a best of 6m, while Kurtis Marschall claimed bronze with a personal best of 5.95m.

Mujinga Kambundji's sister ran in three finals at the COVID-19-delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Geordie Beamish, who represents New Zealand, achieved a world championship title in the 3000m steeplechase at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, but he did not win a world title in the high jump; the high jump gold was won by Hamish Kerr, also from New Zealand.

Overall, the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo were a memorable event, filled with exciting moments and historic achievements.
