Athlete Petros secures second place
In the sweltering heat of Tokyo, 30-year-old Amanal Petros, a refugee from Africa who moved to Germany in 2012, made history by securing the second German men's marathon medal in the history of the Athletics World Championships.
Petros, a marathon runner, completed the gruelling 42.195-kilometre race in 2:09:48 hours, just narrowly missing out on gold in a thrilling final sprint against Alphonce Simbu of Tanzania.
This impressive feat marks the second medal for the German Athletics Federation in Japan, following Malaika Mihambo's silver medal in the long jump at the same championships.
Petros' achievement is particularly significant as it comes two years after German athletes returned home empty-handed from the World Championships in Budapest.
Waldemar Cierpinski, who won the first German men's marathon medal at the Athletics World Championships in 1983 in Helsinki, must have been proud to see Petros emulate his success.
Alexander Fromm, the German marathon national coach, expressed great emotion and praise after Petros won the silver medal at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Fromm, who is also Petros' coach, has been instrumental in Petros' journey, guiding him through the challenges of adapting to a new country and excelling in his sport.
Petros' win is a testament to his determination, resilience, and talent, and it serves as an inspiration to refugees and athletes alike. His story is a reminder that with hard work and perseverance, anyone can achieve great things.
