The winds of change seem to be blowing in favor of a German Olympic bid, as per Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Minister of Social Affairs and Sport, Stefanie Drese. She believes that growing public and political backing can help propel the bid forward, solidifying support from the federal government, states, and municipalities.
Speaking at the conclusion of the Sportministerkonferenz in Chemnitz, Drese highlights the importance of enhancing sports enthusiasts' conditions nationwide, emphasizing the unique sailing opportunities offered by Rostock-Warnemünde. However, these benefits are not always fully recognized in western Germany.
A German bid is seen as an opportunity to instigate sustainable growth in the sports sector across Germany. "We need extra investments in sports infrastructure - both for elite and recreational sports," Drese urges. In the past, funding for sports facilities has been meager, leaving many in need of upgrades. The new federal government's coalition agreement sets aside 1 billion euros for sports, a move welcomed by Drese.
Plans for the bid reach even further, with sports clubs in MV gaining members and increasing the demand for sports facilities. To address the backlog in renovations, Drese believes that sports should benefit from the new infrastructure special fund of the federal government. "Sports are on the rise, bridging gaps in society, and promoting unity. Thus, every investment in sports is well-spent," Drese affirms.
Despite previous attempts to bring Olympic competitions to Warnemünde falling short, the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has already cast a majority vote in favor of a German Olympic bid for the 2036 or 2040 Summer Games, with Rostock-Warnemünde as the sailing venue. The federal government made a significant stride last year by signing a joint basic agreement with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and interested states and cities for a fresh attempt at hosting the Olympics in Germany. Hamburg and Berlin are possible contenders. The DOSB is expected to reach a decision by the end of 2025 regarding which cities to bid with at the International Olympic Committee.
With broad support from various sectors and solid hosting experience, Germany aims to take a leap towards bringing the Olympics back home. The potential sailing venue in Rostock-Warnemünde, with its favorable conditions and infrastructure, stands as a key contender in the future German Games plan. The final decision on the bid is expected by autumn 2026, marking a crucial milestone in Germany's Olympic journey.
