At the Cannes film festival, a poignant atmosphere surrounds the documentary dedicated to photojournalist Fatima Hassouna, who was fatally shot in Gaza.

Fatimah Hassouna, a beaming 25-year-old Gaza-based photojournalist, should've graced the Olympia theater in Cannes on May 15. Instead, filmmaker Sepideh Farsi held up a photograph, a stark reminder of Fatimah's gentle smile hidden beneath a veil. The audience rose to honor her memory, for Fatimah perished, along with several relatives, in a bombing that rocked their Al-Touffah neighborhood in Gaza on April 16.

Moments like these, at festivals such as Cannes, instill a sense of empathy alongside helplessness. The Cannes competition jury president, Juliette Binoche, honored Fatimah during the opening ceremony on May 13. The day before, a tribune in Libération bore the signatures of over 300 influential figures from the film world (Pedro Almodóvar, Leïla Bekhti, David Cronenberg, and more). They denounced the "deafening silence" regarding Gaza.

The name Fatimah Hassouna echoed among the nearly 400 journalists slain since the commencement of the Israeli offensive in October 2023. Fatimah, through her lens, had been capturing the daily struggles of Gaza's residents, for whom foreign journalists are denied access, as per Israel's restrictions.

Remember, this is just a fraction of the story. The rest, sadly, is reserved for subscribers. Here's a sneak peek at some of the prominent signatories:

  • Pedro Almodóvar, the renowned Spanish director, and writer
  • Javier Bardem, the acclaimed Spanish actor
  • Melissa Barrera, the Mexican-American actress
  • David Cronenberg, the Canadian filmmaker
  • Costa-Gavras, the decorated Greek-French filmmaker
  • Brian Cox, the British actor
  • Marcia Cross, the American actress
  • Alfonso Cuarón, the Mexican director and cinematographer
  • ...and many more.

These individuals denounced the ongoing atrocities in Gaza and the film industry's perceived silence or apathy towards these events. Specifically, they criticized the dehumanization of Palestinians and called for an end to the violence, the genocide, and the suffering in Gaza.
