At Aveyron's campsite, tents transform into sweltering sauna-like spaces due to intense heat
In the heart of southern France, the municipal campsite in Espalion is currently under orange vigilance for a heatwave, a warning issued by the French meteorological service when high temperatures and duration pose a risk to health.
At 73 years old, Gérard is one of the campers braving the stifling heat. He's staying at the campsite in a camping car, which, unfortunately, does not have air conditioning. The inside temperature has been reaching 36 degrees, even with the use of a fan.
Gérard, who has been experiencing the heatwave firsthand, has noticed that heatwaves are starting earlier and lasting longer. His observations align with the general meteorological knowledge that heatwaves in southern France during early August tend to bring persistent, high daytime temperatures, often coupled with mild nights, increasing the risk for heat-related illnesses.
Other campers at the site are faring no better. Those in caravans are also experiencing the sweltering heat, with temperatures inside their vehicles reaching similar levels despite the use of fans. Tourists are staying at the campsite in tents, caravans, or camping cars, but the heatwave conditions are affecting everyone's comfort.
Laetitia and Corinne from Manosque are among the campers at the site, staying with three couples. They, too, are feeling the effects of the heatwave. Despite the challenging conditions, they are making the best of their stay, enjoying the camaraderie that comes with shared hardships.
The heatwave conditions in Aveyron, once known for its coolness and humidity, are a stark contrast to the coastal resorts. The department, home to the prefecture of Rodez, is now experiencing heatwaves similar to those in coastal areas, a change that has caught many by surprise.
Gérard's story serves as a reminder of the impact of climate change on our lives. As we face more frequent and intense heatwaves, it's crucial to take precautions, especially for the elderly and vulnerable members of our society.

[1] Gérard's interest in environmental science, particularly climate-change studies, has been piqued by the apparent changes in weather patterns, such as heatwaves, he's observed during his camping trips.
[2] As a concerned citizen, Gérard often refers to weather-forecasting resources like Météo-France, not only for his safety during his trips but also to deepen his understanding of climate-change phenomena shaping the global environment.
[3] In light of the increasing occurrences of extreme weather events and the adverse impacts on human health and well-being, Gérard contends that the study of climate change and environmental science becomes essential for society's proactive response and resilience.
