Space Travel: Why Europe Needs Its Own Freighter, According to Astronaut Maurer

Esa astronaut Matthias Maurer sees Europe's planned space transporter as a significant step towards a larger role for the continent in space exploration. Speaking to the German Press Agency, the astronaut hailed the European Space Agency (Esa)'s decision to launch the development of its own freighter as a game-changer. "To play a part in the space industry's future, we need to contribute something in return," said Maurer.

Looking ahead to a future filled with multiple commercial space stations in Earth's orbit, the 53-year-old Saarland native underlines the importance of a reliable resupply service. As it stands, Elon Musk's SpaceX dominates the area, which the Americans are keen on Europe breaking into.

Could the European freighter eventually transport astronauts too? Maurer poses this intriguing question, suggesting that European governments might see merit in investing in such a capability. Esa has scheduled the presentation of design proposals for the European space freighter by the beginning of 2024, with a tentative 2028 launch date in mind.

The funding decision, however, will not be made until the Esa Council of Ministers votes on the next three-year budget in 2025.

Europe's Role in Space Travel

The development of a European space freighter promises various advantages. For one, it will bolster Europe's capacity to independently access space, supporting various space missions and programs, including lunar missions.

Moreover, the Ariane 6 launch system, contributory to the development, promises to halve launch costs and increase annual capacity from seven to eleven missions compared to its predecessor, the Ariane 5.

Additionally, the Block 2 version of the Ariane 6, due to launch in 2026, offers significant payload capabilities boost and might help Europe take a significant share in the lucrative space industry.

Asuming the development and operation of the Ariane 6 proceed as planned, Europe is set to play a more prominent role in space travel, as suggested by Esa astronaut Matthias Maurer.
