Ireland's Cian McPhillips Shines in World Athletics Championships Semi-Final

In a thrilling turn of events, Ireland's Cian McPhillips has secured a place in the final of the World Athletics Championships outdoor 800 metre event, following his impressive performance in the semi-final in Tokyo.

Training tirelessly to recover from a stress fracture in his leg, McPhillips prepared for the big race using a cross trainer, stationary bike, and non-gravity treadmill. His dedication paid off, as he set a new Irish record time of 1:43.18 in the semi-final, leaving the audience in awe.

The semi-final was a family affair for the McPhillips family, who watched the race from their homes. Paddy McPhillips, Cian's father, was "literally speechless" watching his son race, while his sister, Sarah, shared the sentiment. The family's mother was even busy preparing a lasagna in the kitchen as they watched the race unfold.

Cian McPhillips's path to the World Athletics Championships has been filled with challenges. He missed the Paris Olympics last year due to long Covid, and has faced numerous injuries and setbacks in the past. Despite these obstacles, McPhillips's determination and resilience have shone through, as he qualified for the final of the World Athletics Championships.

McPhillips began his training journey with Joe Ryan in Mullingar during his first year in secondary school. Mr. McPhillips, Cian's father, initially coached his son before seeking help from Joe Ryan due to concerns about overtraining Cian. Mr. McPhillips does not consider himself to be Cian's coach, but rather a supportive figure in his son's journey.

In his early days, McPhillips won All-Irelands with minimal training and unstructured training. However, as he grew as an athlete, he recognised the importance of a structured training programme and sought the guidance of Joe Ryan.

McPhillips's big anxiety was to just get on the plane and on the track in Tokyo, making up for the disappointment of missing the Paris Olympics. His hard work and dedication have paid off, and he will now compete in the final of the World Athletics Championships.

As McPhillips prepares for the final, he will no doubt draw on the support of his family and his coach, Joe Ryan, who has been by his side since the beginning of his journey. We wish him the best of luck in the final!
