Unbelievable Victory for Victoria Carl in Trondheim!
Cross-country skiing sensation, Victoria Carl, is making waves once again with her latest triumph in Trondheim, Norway. After clinching the gold in Beijing's Olympic Games, Carl's victory at the World Cup is her first individual success outside of stage races in nearly two decades.
Carl flew around the reindeer skin in celebration, having claimed a stunning 19.6-second lead over Rosie Brennan from the USA in the 10-kilometer Interval Start Classic race. Ebba Andersson from Sweden, the skiathlon world champion, finished third.
"I can't believe I did it! The whole team is on fire, I'm over the moon," Carl shared with excitement. This achievement broke the 17-year streak of individual victories outside of stage races for German women, with Claudia Nystad taking the last win in Otepää, Estonia, in 2004.
Carl's stunning victory came as a surprise, even though she's been displaying impressive performances recently. She finished third in the 10km Freestyle race in Östersund, Sweden, and had also secured fifth in the sprint and sixth in the skiathlon during the previous week in Trondheim.
However, Carl's triumph was more than just her individual performance. Her team colleague Pia Fink achieved a remarkable seventh place in the 10km event, replacing the Norwegian Astrid Oeyre Slind who was leading during the race.
Though her victory was somewhat unexpected, one thing was clear: no competitor could catch up to Carl during the race. Even the World Cup leader Jessie Diggins from the USA, with bib number 56, failed to reach Carl's top time, further reducing the pressure on the German athlete.
With the Tour de Ski, the highlight of the season, starting on December 30, Carl is expected to recover thoroughly from her recent win and refocus for the crucial races ahead. The World Championships won't be held until 2025, but for now, Carl has claimed her favorite course in Trondheim as a new goal to conquer.
