Astana's Paralympians secure four medals at the ITTF World Para Challenger Astana 2025 event
In the bustling city of Astana, the Jaksylyk Ushkempirov Palace of Sports played host to the ITTF World Para Challenger Astana 2025 international table tennis tournament. The event, held from an unspecified date, saw the participation of para-athletes from all over the world, including nine representatives from Astana.
Among the Astana contingent was Altynai Erzhankyzy, the national team leader and an Astana representative. Erzhankyzy, partnering with Marat Surtbaev, won a silver medal in the mixed doubles category. In the individual category, Erzhankyzy secured a bronze medal, demonstrating her formidable skills on the table.
However, the tournament saw some disappointments for other Kazakhstan players. Ali Makhulbekov, competing in the Mixed Doubles Class XD14, lost his matches, with scores of 0-3 or 1-3 in sets. Despite valiant efforts, no Kazakhstan players were reported to have won medals in the documented events.
International athletes, such as Shae Thakker (silver, men's class 10 singles) and Dmitry Lavrov (gold and silver at the tournament), took home the top medals. The detailed match scores show that Kazakhstan players fought hard but ultimately fell short of the podium.
Astana's Alexandra Stepanova, paired with Turkish athlete Hatiş Duman, managed to secure a bronze medal in the WD5-10 category. In the WD14-20 doubles category, Erzhankyzy, partnering with neutral athlete Safiroa Fayzutdinova, won a silver medal.
Over the five-day competition, a total of 39 athletes from Kazakhstan participated, showcasing the nation's commitment to the sport. The tournament included competitions in individual, doubles, and mixed doubles categories, providing a diverse and challenging platform for the athletes.
Despite the lack of top medals, the Kazakhstan national team demonstrated their potential and determination at the ITTF World Para Challenger Astana 2025. The team will undoubtedly continue to strive for success in future tournaments.
