Astana's Nauryz Meyramy Dazzles with Drone Shows and Ancient Traditions
Astana has come alive with vibrant celebrations for Nauryz Meyramy, the festival marking the arrival of spring. On March 22, the city's streets and squares filled with food stalls, cultural workshops, and traditional performances. As night fell, a spectacular drone show illuminated the sky over Uzaq Batyr Square, blending modern technology with ancient Kazakh heritage.
The drone display turned Astana's evening into a dazzling spectacle. Glowing installations depicted iconic symbols of Kazakh culture: yurts, tai kazans (traditional cooking cauldrons), and even a camel caravan. A giant three-dimensional tulip, representing spring's renewal, bloomed in the sky, while the words 'Happy Nauryz!' shone brightly above the crowd.
Beyond the drone show, the festival highlighted deep-rooted traditions. Visitors experienced Tengri rituals, watched eagle hunters (berkutchi) demonstrate their skills, and listened to live dombra music. Workshops on yurt-building and bazaars selling traditional foods like shubat (fermented camel milk) added to the festivities. Public squares across the capital hosted food courts, craft demonstrations, and interactive displays. The celebrations blended old and new, from ancient nomadic customs to cutting-edge light displays, all honouring the spirit of Nauryz.
The festival continues to draw crowds with its mix of tradition and innovation. Drone artistry and cultural performances have made this year's Nauryz Meyramy one of Astana's most visually striking celebrations. The events will run throughout the day, offering residents and visitors a chance to experience Kazakhstan's rich heritage.
